Anthurium or the Flamingo Flower is a very famous Tropical Flower and is indigenous to the tropical lands of Mexico, Uruguay and North Argentina. Also known as the Tail Flower (Greek word 'Anthurium' meaning Tail Flower), this is a bright red heart-shaped Flower that grows like a bulged-out covering from a fleshy spike which holds the actual small Flowers. This bulging-out gives the Flower the pattern of a human tongue and for this reason and for its vibrant red color, Anthurium is also called as the Painted Tongue. Naturally blooming in the color of red, the Tail Flower is also cultivated in almost all shades of red. The long stems of the Anthurium Flowering plant grow to the height of almost 15-20 inches, at pace with the size of the bulged-out covering, that is the bigger the covering, the longer will be the stem, and are of colorful textures like of colors orange, pink, green, yellow and white. Anthurium is highly popular in the cut Flower market for its enduring vase life of 6 weeks. However, it must be remembered that the Anthurium is a highly toxic Flower whose touch causes skin irritation and whose accidental consumption can lead to serious stomach disorders.
Anthuriums need well-irrigated and highly organic soil to grow and can be grown through any of these 4 methods of tissue culture, fertilization, vegetative reproduction and seeds. But it should be kept in mind that the process of mulching is the must pre-requisite for breeding of the Anthurium flowering plants. The Tail Flower thrives well in environs of abundant indirect light, but cannot survive under direct sunlight since its leave tend to get burned up under direct sunlight. Another condition necessary for the care of the Anthuriums is the maintenance of the balance between watering the flowers and letting their roots to dry. Tail Flowers need watering only when the soil feel dry at touch. But just like under watering makes the roots parched-up and stops growth of the Anthurium flowering plants, over watering leads to the rotting of the roots. So the balance is necessary indeed. Highly popular as house plants, Anthuriums are mostly cultivated in the country of Holland which is also its largest exporter.
The Indian state of Mizoram celebrates the blooming of the Anthurium flowers on the months of September and October through a 3 day cultural gala of flower show, handicrafts fair, tribal dances and music and fashion events. Famous as the Anthurium festival, this celebration happens at the Reiek Village, located at the foothills of the Reiek Mountain in Mizoram.
Thought to bring luck and protect against evil, legend has it that when the anemone closes its petals, it's a signal that rain is approaching. Still other mythology connects the anemone to magical fairies, who were believed to sleep under the petals after they closed at sunset. Perhaps it's because of this magical and prophetic tales that today in the language of flowers, anemones represent anticipation.
The two you will likely come across are as follows:
Painter's Palette - This is the more difficult one out of the two, but funny enough the Painter's Palette is the easiest one to find in shops. It has arrow shaped and highly polished leaves with an almost unreal looking appearance, which may get people wondering if the plant is genuine or artificial. The leaf or spathe surrounding the flowering spike is normally red but either way the Flower spike itself is always straight.
Flamingo Flower - The Flower spike is also curly and usually the same colour as the spathe whereas the Painter's Palette has a straight spathe which is typically yellow or white. Providing they are in Flower, this is therefore the easiest way to tell the two varieties apart.
